The Passenger

A song I love is “The Passenger” by Iggy Pop.

I was a toddler when this song came out in 1977 on the album Lust for Life. Jangly, fitful, somewhat awkward guitar line over and over. Simple percussion. David Bowie and Iggy singing “La la la la la la la la.” Beautiful and wild!

Siouxsie and the Banshees covered the song in 1987 when I was an awkward adolescent. Meanwhile, Siouxsie had already gone through (awkward? was Siouxsie ever awkward?) adolescence and was a beautiful punk rock woman with killdeer* make up .

“The Passenger” is a song for late night car rides. It’s best to be a passenger and sing along into the car’s window while the street lights shine on a slant.
