I needed some music - something chill but with some life, not sleepy, not depressing. I had two cakes, a roast, and granola to make, and the sun had long set. I settled on a live album by Doc Watson, Songs for Little Pickers. Not completely chill, definitely high energy - fast country pickin’ on an acoustic guitar, plus a too-short jaw harp track.
“The Riddle Song” is a favorite, along with “Mole in the Ground” and “And the Grass Grass Grew All Around”. I enjoy singing all of them, especially the first and the last. “The Riddle Song” - I can finally sing it without getting weepy, except for when I sing along with Doc. The lyrics are sweet.
