I noticed I was faltering on writing about my illness. I took yesterday off from writing. In the morning, Jared and I saw financial professionals - friends - who were willing to talk shop with us. Afterwards, we picked up our son and celebrated a family member’s birthday well into the night. We returned to a chilly house, tired and stuffed with food. Bed called, not writing.

Huggy Bear / Taking the Rough with the Smooch

I had two friends (men) who played instruments, actually played, in fact, one played acoustic guitar really well. Ranging from very pretty, very sweet to very intense stuff. Anyway, they liked me. I liked them. They liked that I didn't know how to play. We spent days and days in the basement or garage making noise. I played in many bands with those guys. Some lasted a month, some lasted years. ISCKYA and TENS Unit were the first two bands, inspired by that raw girl/boy revolutionary spirit of Huggy Bear.

By the time I found Fugazi, I was also a burgeoning feminist (remember that egalitarian thing). Very few bands I knew of included women. I'd loved Blondie, Cyndi Lauper, and Madonna. However, there were no musicians I knew of that combined "in reach and therefore human and real seeming" (Cyndi is pretty damn real, though) with "woman".
