Jared and I recorded a couple songs tonight. Writing lyrics has been a nightmare. I can't commit to writing one set of lyrics to sing again and again.
Over the years Jared and I have learned many covers, old blues and folks songs mostly. Mississippi John Hurt, Dave Van Ronk, Elzabeth Cotten, Kossoy Sisters, Skip James. I must have sung the lyrics hundreds of times each, maybe. But my own lyrics?
Once I played in a band in which I wrote parts for violin and played them more than once. I wrote lyrics, too, for three songs. Same band. One set I 'wrote' on the spot while behind the microphone as I recorded the vocal tracks for our demo.
All other bands: no parts, all improv.
So, tonight Jared played his songs. I sang. "That sounds good. Let's record a scratch copy," he said. I could not repeat what I had done without his help. What's my hang up? It's so interesting.
