January 23, 2018, Day 5 of 30 Day Music Challenge
I have to get out of my head, so I go outside. I have to leave the space where my personal experience is the queen of references, so I go outside.
The music outside is birdsong. The days are lengthening and the birds know it. I hear cardinal, chickadee, nuthatch, white-throated sparrow, song sparrow, Carolina wren, red-bellied woodpecker. I am restored.
A few weeks ago, Beren, my seven year old son, and I were arguing on our fitful way out the door. Why is it so hard to get going every time? I wondered.
I paused at the window. "Look at the birds," I said. Silently, we watched the birds come and go from the birdfeeder. Our bodies touched just barely, and there was no more anger as we listened to the wing beats of small birds.
We went on our way, restored.
